The Creative Act, Rules (Rubin)

The whole point of the rules is to give you a foundation.  Once you sufficiently master the rules, you will know when, and how, to break them to make your work interesting.

But you have to learn them first.

Yesterday's quote from Shaw —  “Forgive him, for he believes that the customs of his tribe are the laws of nature.” — still seems apropos.
